Trans Symbolism in The Matrix

  1. The iconic red pill is only red because a common kind of estrogen pill at the time was red. Morpheus presents Neo with a choice.
  2. The outfits worn by the protagonists become more androgynous as the movie goes on, until they wear black leather trench coats at the end of the film.
  3. Inside of the Agent Training Program, Morpheus(Laurence Fushburne) tells Neo(Keanu Reeves) this quote: "Their strength, their speed is based in a world built on rules, so they will never be as fast or as strong as you can be," more or less spelling out the theme of the movie. By disregarding the constraints of tradition and convention, Neo discovers his true self.
  4. At the end of the movie, the camera zooms in between the M and the F in, "System Failure." The 'System Failure' at the end of the Matrix
  5. The primary antagonist of the movie, Agent Smith(Hugo Weaving,) refers to Neo by his deadname, "Mr. Anderson" Agent Smith
  6. The character Switch was originally intended to live up to her name, and appear female within the Matrix, but male in the "real world." This was cut by the studio, but in the final cut, Switch presents very androgynously, hinting at her original nature.
